Takeda's oveporexton approval opens orexin peptide race, Lilly buys Centessa
Morgan Stanley estimates orexin medicines could reach $16bn a year by 2035 in narcolepsy and related sleep disorders, against roughly $3bn for current drugs.
The wire
- 01The FDA approved Takeda's oveporexton on August 5 as the first orexin agonist for narcolepsy, while Eli Lilly bought Centessa in June in a deal worth up to $7.8bn tied to trial success.
- 02Orexin neuropeptides regulate wakefulness, attention, motivation and reward, and developers including Alkermes are pursuing the receptor beyond narcolepsy into depression, ADHD and addiction.
- 03Those broader indications rest on early-stage work; narcolepsy affects about one person in 2,000 in America, and the $16bn forecast is a bank estimate, not a result.
