Tirzepatide tied to fewer COPD exacerbations than SGLT2 inhibitors in TriNetX cohort
All-cause mortality was also lower with tirzepatide than with SGLT2 inhibitors or DPP-4 inhibitors in propensity-matched patients with COPD and type 2 diabetes.

The wire
- 01Retrospective TriNetX analysis matched 6,080 tirzepatide patients against SGLT2i users and found a COPD exacerbation hazard ratio of 0.73 (95% CI 0.64-0.82) over 365 days; versus DPP-4i, 0.72.
- 02Clinicians managing comorbid COPD and type 2 diabetes have little outcome data on dual GIP/GLP-1 agonists; the authors also report lower acute respiratory failure and lower respiratory tract infection risks.
- 03Observational design with shorter median follow-up in tirzepatide arms (about 233 days versus 365) invites residual confounding; the authors say randomized trials are needed to confirm.
