Semaglutide program lifts gait speed in 22 Japanese obesity patients

Usual gait speed rose from 0.77 to 0.91 m/s over 12 months, with improvement unrelated to how much weight or pain each patient lost.

The wire

  1. 01A retrospective study in Internal Medicine followed 22 adults with obesity and musculoskeletal disorders through a 12-month program of semaglutide, bimonthly nutrition counseling and physical therapist-guided exercise; weight fell from 89.2 kg to 81.5 kg.
  2. 02Gait speed improved significantly (p<0.001) and pain scores improved, suggesting clinicians could track mobility recovery alongside weight when assessing obesity treatment.
  3. 03Gains in gait speed did not correlate with weight loss (r=0.22) or pain reduction (r=-0.04); the sample was 22 patients, retrospective, uncontrolled and bundled with exercise and diet intervention.
